The Shusha Chess 2022 international tournament is organized by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Azerbaijan Chess Federation (ACF) and the Shusha City State Reserve Department. It is for the first time in the history of Azerbaijan as an independent state that an international chess tournament is held in Shusha. Top players from Azerbaijan participated in the tournament. The tournament consisted of Rapid and Blitz events.
Vidit Gujarathi was the lone participant from India. He was the 5th seed in the tournament behind the likes of Mamedyarov Shakhriyar, Radjabov Teimour, Wang Hao and Maghsoodloo Parham. Vidit scored 13 points in Rapid and 10.5 points in Blitz, ending the tournament with a total score of 23.5 points. Vidit secured wins over Wang Hao and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov in the Blitz section to climb up the ladder in the overall rankings.
With a score of 23.5, Vidit finished 3rd in the tournament behind Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Parham Maghsoodloo who finished 1st and 2nd respectively. This was indeed a great performance by the Indian grandmaster against a top playing field in an OTB event. Vidit plans to play more OTB events especially Classical format to improve his Elo points and get better in the global standings.
