Vidit bags individual Silver as team Novy Bor grabs Gold at European Club Championship ‘2022

European Chess Club Championship is considered as the prestigious inter-club team tournament in Europe wherein all the top players across the globe participate. This edition was conducted at Mayrhofen, Austria from 2 to 11 October. Top Indian players like Vishwanathan Anand, Gukesh, Vidit and Harikrishna were a part of the event. Vidit and Harikrishna play for the same team Novy Bor Chess Club from Czech Republic.

The Indian duo of Vidit and Harikrishna laid a strong foundation for the team and putting them in a commanding position. The team won six consecutive matches and Vidit managed to secure a double hat-trick of wins scoring 6/6 in the first 6 rounds of the tournament. In the last round, team Novy Bor scored 3.5-2.5 victory against Asnieres Le Grand Echiquier to take the top spot and win the Gold medal.

This is a long awaited title for the club as they won ECCC after 7 years. It is the second championship for the Czech team — the first was in 2013. With a scintillating performance over the board at an Elo of 2885, Vidit secured individual silver medal on Board 2. With this amazing performance, Vidit also gained Elo points and is currently #3 in India and top 20 in the world as per live ratings.
