Nihal is Tata Steel Chess India ‘2022 (Rapid) champion, Vidit finished 3rd
The Indian chess prodigy delivers his career best performance to win Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Rapid with a round to spare. He finished the tournament with a score of 6.5/9 and remained unbeaten. It was all Indians show at the Rapid event with top 3 spots taken by Indian players – Nihal Sarin, Arjun Erigaisi and Vidit Gujarathi.
All the players and viewers believed that the 4th edition of Tata Steel Chess India had one of the strongest playing fields with the likes of Hikaru Nakamura, Wesley So, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Abdusattarov and young Indian brigade of Nihal, Arjun and Gukesh. Also, for the first time there was a separate women’s event (Rapid and Blitz) with equal prize pool and same format. For the first time in the history of Chess, an event has the same prize pool for Men’s and Women’s section. Women’s section was dominated having the likes of Muzychuk sisters, Nana Dzagnidze, Anna Ushenina, Humpy, Harika and Vaishali.
Indians dominated the events by cliching top 3 spots in the Men’s section. Whereas in the women’s section, Anna Ushenina won the event followed by Nana and Harika clinching 2nd and 3rd position respectively. Vidit continues his great form and scored 4.5/9 sharing the points table with Hikaru, Gukesh, Shakhriyar and Nodirbek. However, Vidit had better tie-breaks and eventually took the 3rd spot.
Tata Steel Chess India is the biggest chess festival in India conducted in Kolkata every year. It is the brainchild of Tata Steel Chess, Wijk aan Zee and looks to provide the same platform to top Indian players to compete with the best global players. It has Rapid and Blitz events and consist of 5 Indian and 5 foreign players.
