
Indian team loses to USA, settles for Bronze medal at FIDE Olympiad ‘2021

The journey of the defending champions of the FIDE Online Olympiad – India comes to an end after a nail biting contest with USA in the Semi-finals. The game went down to the wire in tie-breaks and eventually USA outplayed the Indian team.
India were the favorites to win the semi-final. They were the better team on paper while the USA had their second string in play in the absence of Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, and Wesley So — all of whom are involved in other tournaments.India started the semi-final in great fashion as they outplayed the United States in the first rapid chess duel. But Team USA came back strongly and won the next duel and then went on to win the blitz tie-break to seal a place in the final.
India were surely the favorites to win the event as they started off the tournament in great style dominating all the boards in different categories.
