
India B and India A team wins Bronze medal in Open and Women’s category at FIDE Chess Olympiad ‘2022

Starting the tournament as hot favorites and fielding 3 teams in Men’s and Women’s section, India was fielding its largest contingent at the recently concluded Chess Olympiad in Chennai. India A in the women’s section was the top seeds in the tournament with India A in men’s section being in the top 3. India B team in the open section consisted of the young Indian chess brigade including the likes of Gukesh, Pragg, Nihal, Raunak and Adhiban.
It was a good start for the Indian teams in the tournament but things turned upside down mid-way. India A with the likes of top Indian players like Vidit, Harikrishna, Arjun, SL Narayanan couldn’t capitalize on scoring wins whereas the young brigade was on a march by securing consecutive wins and cementing their strong position. India A in the women’s section was also dominating with the likes of Humpy, Harika, Tania, Vaishali. Although there was a close contest amongst Ukraine, Polland and India in the women’s section.

On the final day of the tournament, Indian women’s team walked into the hall with one hand on the gold medal and hopes of creating history. Whereas India B team in the open section missed on the Gold medal by losing penultimate round to Uzebekistan, the ultimate winners. Nevertheless, Indian teams scripted history by winning 2 bronze medals and many board medals. India A in the open section secured 4th position. This is considered as India’s best performance at the Olympiad till date and what makes it more special is that this amazing performance has come in the home soil.
